Something I would love to work with Oregon Democratss on!
Big companies are trying to keep consumers trapped in their business ecosystem for issues such as repairs, parts, routine service and more. This impacts all of us. Third parties such as your car mechanics and phone repair shops are increasingly not able to get parts and support from manufacturers. With the growth of electric vehicles your mechanic is increasingly not allowed to access the software and proprietary components.
I personally do lots of repairs to my own computers, phones, car and more. Over the years I have literally safe thousands of dollars with DIY work.
This extends beyond your home. Industries are affected in a major way. Issues have raised up that farmers are not allowed to work on their tractors because manufacturers are locking them into proprietary parts and work.
Manufacturers are notorious for charging much higher prices for services compared to third parties such as your local garage mechanic or electronic repair.
This also contributes to our wasteful disposable consumerism.
I am a huge fan of Louis Rossmann and his Right to Repair activism. If you have any questions about this issue he has been involved and making videos for years now.
